Designing the Grounds

Designing the Grounds

Who doesn’t love a castle. Touring Europe feels like flipping through a storybook—castle after castle rising out of the landscape. Recently, I realized the real magic isn’t the stone walls. It’s the grounds. From intricate gardens to the way mature trees, layered hedges, and perfectly imperfect stone paths create a sense of wonder before you ever step inside. Maybe I can’t replicate a castle at home, but I can upgrade my grounds.

Right now, it’s peak season. Landscaping companies are slammed. Phones are ringing, schedules are filling, and if you wait too long…you’re not getting a patio this year—your’e getting a dream deferred to next spring. So if you’re staring at your yard thinking, "this could be more,” you’re right, here’s where to start.

Start with Budget. Landscaping is one of the most underestimated costs in home improvement. If your mental math says, “a few thousand and a long weekend,” I’m going to stop you right there. That’s not a landscape project—that’s just a trip to the garden center. Most meaningful projects being in the $30,000-$50,000 range, and go up quickly depending on scope. Here’s a reality check: consider a concrete patio which is budget friendly. A stone paver patio, however, is dramatically more character but labor-intensive, so expect that luxury to be three times the cost.

Hire the Designer. This is not a DIY moment and where most people need help. Landscaping isn’t just planting shrubs—it’s architecture. You’re dealing with grading, drainage, scale, sightline, and flow. Done right, it feels effortless. A landscape designer takes your flat, underwhelming yard and turns it into a sequence of experiences. Locally, a few standouts worth calling: Fiddlehead Gardens, Sustainable Landscape Solutions, and Country Landscapes.

Be Ready to Edit. You’re not going to get everything—and that’s ‘okay’. The best projects are phased. You build the bones first: patio, structure, layout. Then layer in the details over time—plantings, lighting, features. Yes, outdoor spaces are commanding a premium right now. Buyers love them but let’s be clear: landscaping is rarely a dollar-for-dollar ROI play. But it’s your house so do it for your own relaxation and enjoyment—not for the investment.

You don’t need a castle. But if your yard makes people pause—even for a second—before they walk inside? That’s when you know you got it right.

📸 Castle grounds from my recent trip to Portugal where I realized after touring castles from Scotland to France to Norway; it was less the castle itself and the grounds that were astonishing. I'm enthralled with the enchantment of the grounds but mostly the garden paths, as documented from my photos above. Sand, stone, pebbles, and limestone blocks create various paths that are uneven yet perfectly designed to funnel water off their paths. I'm already planning my backyard to have less of the concrete "code" sidewalk and more garden paths that are imperfectly perfect!
