Either years ago, I heard a screeching sound coming from my attic. It was late—middle of the night, if I remember correctly—and it was a unsettling. Definitely not the tiny scratching you expect from a mouse.
As I lay there listening to it, I remember thinking: what’s worse, something supernatural…or a raccoon? I voted raccoon. Turned out to be a bat.
The point is, there are some things about a house that scare us a whole lot more than ghosts. So, in the spirit of Halloween, let’s talk about what homeowners are actually afraid of. It’s less The Exorcists and more Tom Hank’s worst nightmare in The Money Pit. Because, ya, there are real-world house problems that are considerably scarier than a haunted house.
From a 2025 LendingTree survey:
👉 47% of Americans said they would rather live in a haunted house than deal with mold.
👉 41% said they’d prefer ghosts to bad neighbors
👉 39% would take spirits over structural problems
Honestly, I get it. Ghosts apparently don’t require foundation repair.
So what should you be thinking about if you’re buying a house this fall? Mostly this: look beyond the pretty stuff before you fall completely in love with it.
👉 Investigate the expensive surprises. Water stains, musty odors, cracks and foundation concerns deserve a closer look. A good home inspection can help identify problems—and, just as importantly, tell you when it’s time to bring in a specialist.
👉 Get to know the neighborhood. Drive by at different times of day. What’s traffic like at 8 a.m.? What happens on a Friday night? Are the neighbors quiet, loud, friendly, invisible? You’re buying the location along with the house.
👉 Look beyond the mortgage payment. Property taxes, insurance, maintenance and HOA dues all belong in the budget. Ask about upcoming repairs and special assessments, too. A surprisingly affordable house can become surprisingly unaffordable rather quickly.
The goal isn’t to find a house without a single flaw. Those basically don’t exist. It’s to understand what you’re buying before the surprises become yours.
