Southern Colonial Craftsman

A Chic Restoration that Reflects the Traditional Setting

It is to be expected that interior design will evolve to reflect changing lifestyles. But the recent changes has been a return to traditional architectural as boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces are becoming more blurred. This Southern Colonial Craftsman acknowledges the traditional and contemporary lifestyles of today.

This Craftsman house was designed to fit in with the neighboring traditional homes and flanking the Founders Square park. The new owners subsequently made substantial changes, all designed to enhance the traditional character while equipping it for modern living.

The double-deck wraparound porch pays homage to vintage Southern Colonial architecture. Low veranda roofs, abundant windows and a band of millwork reinforce the traditional intimacy. A series of columns and lattice detail run around the front porches framing the front entry and dramatic façade.

The house was designed to maximize natural light. Whenever possible, rooms have windows on three sides. Plantation shutters were added to create privacy and daily comfort. The house has a modified four-square plan with two living spaces on the main level. At the front wing is the formal spaces including the living and dining areas. Another wing on the back accommodates the kitchen and family areas.

With its high ceilings and thick white-painted millwork, the interior typifies a Craftsman house but with a modern twist. With hardwood flooring flowing through the main level, the two wings are accessed by a central as well as dining access to the kitchen. Additional traditional features include built-ins, a fireplace, and transoms that allow light to flood the interior. The kitchen also features a casual eat-in dining area with quartz counters and stainless appliances for modern convenience. White-painted Craftsman cabinetry with a patterned tile backsplash provides a lot of visual interest. The effect is enhanced by antique-style light pendants that have a nautical reference.

To provide an open feel while allowing light to pour in, an open foyer accesses the upper level which includes three bedrooms and two full baths. The large owners’ suite includes a walk-in closet and master bath complete with a double-vanity, shower, and soaking tub.

The lower level also has high ceilings which gives the rooms an intimate feel and are in keeping with the grandeur of the main level living. A large second family area also features a recreational area complete with plenty of sunlight from large windows. The lower level also features a large fourth bedroom and bath.

But it’s not just the interior spaces that make this house a retreat—just as much attention was given to the outdoor living areas. With small lots in the Peninsula Neighborhood, space is efficiently used. In addition to the double-deck wraparound porch, a backyard patio and grass area are fenced for privacy. There are plenty of garden spaces that surround the home and enjoy the sun.
